Mini Steals the show at Tatton Park

The Classic Mini has stolen the show at the northern equivalent of the Chelsea Flower Show. Visitors to the annual Tatton Park Flower Show in Cheshire are greeted by an amazing sight of a Classic Mini covered in flowers. Of course the Mini was popular in the flower power era of the 60's in England... would a collection of Minis in bloom be called a Leylandii !!

A fantastic weekend at the British Mini Clubs Showdown 2011 and some top times set down the Quarter Mile at Shakespeare County Raceway all the Class results are shown below, the include Reaction Times , MPH and Exit Times.

Stuart Mead came very close this year to loosing his crown as Quickest Mini In The World to Mike Thomas, Stuart normally runs in the high 9's. He openly admitted that he had a sick car. Same car diffferent driver retained the Quickest A Series, DON 558K in Class G driven by Tom Fenton this time set a top time of 11.673.

Born for the "Green Hell" adventure: The MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance. Racing car celebrates world premiere in 24-hour race at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

Motor sport is in the MINI genes. And now the carmaker is set to add a new chapter to its racing heritage with the arrival of the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance. The newly developed racer will line up at this year’s 24-hour race at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit, previewing the series-production version of the car due to be unveiled to the public in autumn 2011.

With the participation of the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance, the Nürburgring 24-hour race will be staging an automotive world premiere for the first time in its history. At the same time, the extreme demands of the classic endurance event ensure the new MINI model will be given a baptism of fire.
MINI’s declared aim in entering the Nürburgring 24-hour race is to experience the adventure of the “Green Hell”, as the Nürburgring-Nordschleife is affectionately known. And the brand has called, among other things, on the experience gained over many years of MINI Challenge sprint racing in the development of its new racing car for this unique event.
A pure-bred racing set-up will equip the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance for a full day lapping the combined Nordschleife/Grand Prix circuit at race speed. Providing the power is a specially-tuned version of the series-produced MINI John Cooper Works engine. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit – which boasts a twin-scroll turbocharger and petrol direct injection – delivers 250 hp, and the Overboost function pushes peak torque up to 330 Newton metres. Top speed is in excess of 240 km/h.
The MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance sees the brand’s customary go-kart feeling taken to a whole new level. The stiff race suspension ensures impressive roadholding and gives the driver constant, direct feedback from the road surface. Adjustable shock absorber units allow the suspension set-up to be adapted to fluctuating track conditions, a feature that will come in particularly handy at the Nordschleife.
The more steeply raked windscreen of the car’s flat coupé silhouette sets it apart clearly from the Hatch and helps to minimise aerodynamic drag, which the drivers will acknowledge with a smile on the circuit’s long straights.
The John Cooper Works Aerodynamics Package further enhances the Coupé’s already supreme handling; the front spoiler, rear diffuser and adjustable rear wing generate downforce, optimising the balance between the front and rear axle.
The MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance achieves an exceptionally high level of safety thanks to features including a roll cage welded to the body and a sports bucket seat with six-point safety belt and Formula One-style HANS (Head And Neck Support) system. When it comes to active safety, the car adopts the proven braking system with Race ABS from MINI Challenge
racing and adds a specially tuned DSC dynamic control system, likewise optimised for the race track. Plus, in the interests of safety – and rapid pit stops – the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance is kitted out with an integrated pneumatic jack.

British Mini Club will again have a club stand at Gaydon Mini Festival. The event takes place on Sunday 3rd July and is set to be a day of MINI excitement!

Midsummer Mini Tour

Midland Mini Meet

We had a great mini meeting and Midsummer Mini Tour ( Tuesday 21st June) the weather was just perfect for getting out the classic mini and having a drive from The New Wellington Pub in Brierley Hill and onto Bridgnorth in Shropshire.

First we drove to the Severn Park in Bridgnorth for a show n shine vote on for the best mini of the night. We had a fantastic range of minis to choose from, these included and very early Mini Severn, Mini Woody, 1960's Mini Cooper, ERA Turbo, modified Mini Clubman, Mini Cooper 35 along with a host of other models.

After a very successful first Midsummer Mini Tour we will continue this next year.

The winning mini of the night with the lions share of the vote, was the fab Mini Cooper finished in Island Blue with OEW roof owned by Paul Higgs. All the other votes were spread equally to all the other minis that turned out so the league table looks like this.

Kelvin Westwood's Mini Cooper 35 both with 11 points

2nd place are George Marsh ( Mini 35LE )

Kris Meeke to drive MINI WRC at Goodwood

According to www.crash.net Kris Meeke will demo the new MINI John Cooper Works WRC car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month - and the Prodrive-run outfit will also give one member of the public a once in a life time chance to be a passenger in one of these iconic cars.

The lucky person, who will sit beside Meeke on Sunday morning when the car goes through the 1.67 mile loose-surface forest rally stage, will be the winner of a raffle to be held at the annual glittering ball on the Saturday night.

We had a great meeting last night ( Tuesday 14th June) the weather was just perfect for getting out the classic mini and having a drive to The New Wellington Pub in Brierley Hill.

The winning mini of the night was the gorgeous Mini Cooper 35 owned by Kelvin Westwood. All the other votes were spread equally to all the other minis that turned out so the league table looks like this.

On this day at 1.30pm a convoy of colourful Minis all bearing The Italian Job logo will drive one lap of the perimeter of the arena escorting celebrities to the presentation area. If you are available and like to attend please send an email to gsg@italianjob.comconfirming driver name and car registration number. Minis are required between 1.00pm and 2.00pm but are free to remain longer and enjoy the show.

Via our friends at Variety Club Children’s Charity, the Italian Job has been invited to Hickstead for the duration of the Royal International Horse Show 27th -31st July 2011. The Royal International Horse Show will provide a wonderful opportunity to increase our profile and introduce our ‘4 wheel’ horsepower event to over 40.000 spectators and lovers of ‘four legged’ horsepower.

Our Stand will be there for the duration to reinforce the message of the Italian Job fundraising event supporting Variety Club Children’s Charity. Please let us know if any of you are available to give a hand at the Stand and sell lottery tickets on either July 27th,28th, or 29th so that we can arrange for a free entry pass.

Heritage Mini Alliance bid for IMM 2014

It is with great pride to formally announce a late entry bid for the IMM 2014 at the IMM 2011 in Switzerland. The Heritage Mini Alliance is an alliance between the Heritage Motor Centre (Gaydon) and a collection of mini enthusiasts from around Europe, all of whom have the expertise of creating some of the best known shows on the mini calendar.
If the bid is successful the IMM 2014 will be held at the Heritage Motor Centre from the 15 -18 August 2014. Many of you will have been to the Heritage Motor Centre at some point, but if not, the museum is located in the centre of England with easy access from the M40 motorway (about 3 hrs from Dover), and set in some of the most beautiful countryside within historical Shakespeare Country.
Heritage Mini Alliance assures you that the IMM 2014 will be a unique event, drawing on the collective know-how and contacts to make this a memorable show. The Heritage Motor Centre has a large amount of existing facilities on site and can accommodate everyone who wants to attend for the whole weekend or day tickets will be available for Sunday only.
Heritage Mini Alliance will be supplying a wealth of knowledge, along with one of the greatest venues known to the Mini scene. What more can any enthusiast want for memorable IMM 2014, Mini Mokes 50th, Clubmans 45th Anniversary and the Minis' 55th Anniversary

Investigation into 60,000 Mini Coopers in the USA

Just wondered if anyone had come across this in the USA. The New York Times is reporting that:

"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it had found enough reason to upgrade its investigation of a power-steering problem on nearly 60,000 Mini Coopers.

In a document filed on its Web site this last weekend, the agency named the 2004-5 Mini Cooper, but said it might expand the investigation because it received complaints relating to vehicles from other model years.

A preliminary evaluation of the problem began last fall. As a result of that inquiry, the agency received 339 consumer complaints, and BMW, which owns Mini, reported another 180. The document also indicated that the automaker reported about 4,500 warranty claims."

MINI WRC is launched

The return of MINI to one of the biggest stages in motorsport is approaching ever closer. On Monday, the MINI WRC Team was officially presented to the public at the Team Launch, which took place at the MINI Plant in Oxford (GB). This season, the team will contest six rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) with the MINI John Cooper Works WRC. The car will be tested against its rivals for the first time at the Rally d’Italia Sardegna from 5th to 8th May 2011. The goal in the debut season is to gain valuable experience to be perfectly prepared to take on the entire 2012 World Rally Championship.

MINI can look back on a long history of success in rallying. Paddy Hopkirk (GB), Timo Mäkinen (FI) and Rauno Aaltonen (FI) won the Rallye Monte Carlo in the Classic Mini Cooper S in 1964, 1965 and 1967. Today’s driving teams of Kris Meeke (GB)/Paul Nagle (IR) and Dani Sordo (ES)/Carlos del Barrio (ES) are keen to follow in the footsteps of the “Three Musketeers”.

At the launch in the “T Building” of the MINI Plant in Oxford, the spotlight was initially on Hopkirk and Aaltonen as they drove onto the stage behind the wheel of the legendary Classic Mini Cooper S. The guests and media representatives were then treated to their first look at the MINI John Cooper Works WRC in its final World Championship design. The car was developed by Prodrive, based on the MINI Countryman production model.

“On the one hand, MINI can look back on a unique success story,” said Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of the BMW AG for Sales and Marketing. “On the other hand, MINI is the epitome of excitement for millions of fans around the world and thrills them with its energy. This is precisely what we are able to authentically represent through our motorsport involvement in the World Rally Championship. Thrilling rally events, ultimate performances by man and machine, and as much success as possible, of course: motorsport is pure emotion – just as MINI is for its fans.”

David Richards, Chairman and Chief Executive, Prodrive Group, is also looking forward to the first rally for the new MINI John Cooper Works WRC. He said: “We have been working towards this moment for more than two years and it is truly exciting to be launching the MINI WRC Team and what I believe is the most stunning car in World Rallying, the MINI John Cooper Works WRC. We have an experienced team, a talented driver pairing and, most importantly of all, a strong partnership with MINI. We are now eagerly looking forward to demonstrating the performance of the car on its debut in Sardinia in just a few weeks.”

David Wilcock, Technical Director of the MINI WRC Team, presented the guests with the most important details of the MINI John Cooper Works WRC and said: “This Team Launch is really perfectly timed for us. We look back at some extremely demanding and busy months. Now we are entering the crucial phase of our preparation programme for the first rally. We started the development of the MINI John Cooper Works WRC early. It was important to make sure the ratio between development and actual building of the car was right. Our goal was to maximise every area of performance we could get from the technical regulations. Our first rally appearances will show how well we achieved this. In any case I can say that the partnership between MINI, Prodrive and BMW Motorsport on the engine side is running exceptionally well, everyone is contributing to the project with a lot of enthusiasm.”

Having already completed several thousand kilometres of tests behind the wheel of the MINI John Cooper Works WRC, drivers Kris Meeke and Dani Sordo can hardly wait to finally compete in the first rally for the MINI WRC Team. “This launch is the next milestone on the long way to our first rally,” said Meeke following the presentation of the car. “I cannot wait to get the season started. It’s nice for everyone in the team to see the result of their work presented in such a spectacular way. The heritage of MINI in motorsport is fantastic. Now we want to make sure we play our part in adding some more chapters to the success story.”

Sordo is also highly motivated ahead of his sixth season in the World Rally Championship. “It’s about time we get the ball rolling,” said the 2005 Junior World Rally Champion. “The break since my last rally has been long enough, now we want to show how good we are. Everything is new for me this year. Bearing this in mind, the additional time to get accustomed to my new environment has definitely been helpful. Now I’m really looking forward to the new challenge and to fight for strong results with the MINI John Cooper Works WRC.”

The MINI John Cooper Works WRC is powered by a 1.6-litre turbo engine also used in MINI production cars, which was developed by BMW Motorsport for use in series complying with FIA Super 2000 regulations, including the World Touring Car Championship. As well as being responsible for the works team's MINI John Cooper Works WRC cars, Prodrive also supplies customer cars to teams lining up in the World Rally Championship. This applies to the WRC and S2000 versions of the new rally MINI.

Over the course of the afternoon, Meeke and Sordo will complete a number of demonstration runs on a specially set out track at the MINI Plant in Oxford. The MINI WRC Team will then close the event with a party under the motto “The Comeback”.

The show is all about driving abilities and is not a “reality TV show.” It will be a fun couple of days out in June/July at Bentwaters Park in Suffolk for whoever might like to take part. The creation of innovative concepts for urban mobility has seen MINI grow into the successful brand we know today. A constant stream of new ideas from its beginnings more than 50 years ago to the present day have ensured that driving fun has continued to grow even though space on our roads has become ever tighter. Underpinning this success has been the creative use of space, a principle that enters new territory with the MINI Rocketman Concept.

The study car, which will be revealed to the public worldwide for the first time at the International Geneva Motor Show (3 – 13 March 2011), harks back to the classic Mini in terms of its exterior dimensions, while its technology points to the future of automotive design. A 3+1-seater with 3 doors and a length of just over 3 metres (approx. 10 ft.), the MINI Rocketman Concept responds to the fundamental requirements of mobile lifestyles in the big cities of the future by pooling the brand’s core values in concentrated form. Ingenious functionality, smile-inducing agility, exceptional efficiency and irresistible design come together into an extraordinarily attractive and groundbreaking, yet typically MINI, subcompact car concept for the premium segment.

Displaying both an awareness of tradition and talent for innovation, the MINI design team developed the vision of a car that takes up impressively little space on the road but boasts an enviably spacious interior. The MINI Rocketman Concept therefore carries over the classic virtues of the brand into a pathbreaking vehicle concept. It offers a fresh interpretation of unmistakable MINI design features, and uses cutting-edge construction and manufacturing technology to create unique solutions in body and interior design.

The innovative character of the study is defined by the systematic application of lightweight design principles and a pure-bred interior geared to maximum driving fun and unbeatable variability. A carbon spaceframe construction, whose striking surface structure is visible at the front end of the car, around its doors and in the interior, forms the basis for a weight-minimising construction. Indeed, the MINI Rocketman Concept offers the ideal platform for achieving outstanding efficiency. To this end, it is designed to allow the integration of a drive system which combines further enhanced sprinting ability with average fuel consumption of just three litres per 100 kilometres (94 mpg imp).

Wide-opening doors with double-hinge joints and integrated sills facilitate entry into the MINI Rocketman Concept. The lightweight seats are contoured in customary MINI style and can be arranged in a variety of different positions. This allows owners to choose between maximum driving fun two-up, a comfortable amount of room for three occupants, or even an exceptionally efficient division of space accommodating four seats.

The capacity of the luggage compartment can be adapted to passenger requirements just as flexibly. The two-part tailgate consists of one section which is attached to the roof and opens extremely high, and a lower section which extends out of the body in the form of a drawer.

The operating logic of the MINI Rocketman Concept is also geared to the multi-layered demands of a contemporary target group, whose mobility needs are shaped by their desire for driving fun, flexible usage possibilities and extensive connectivity with their lives outside the car. The central control unit can be taken out of the car and configured on a computer before the journey begins to update navigation destinations, the music playlist or contact details for mobile communications.

Body design: hallmark MINI design language in particularly
concentrated form.

The MINI Rocketman Concept body is shaped by an avant-garde interpretation of time-honoured brand features. Innovative construction techniques allow the principle used in the classic Mini – of providing the maximum amount of room on the smallest possible footprint – to be carried over to the mobility challenges of urban areas in the 21st century. The MINI Rocketman Concept measures 3.419 metres (approx. 11 ft. 3 in.) in length, adding just a few extra centimetres to the front and rear of the brand’s founding father born in 1959. The new study is 1.907 metres (approx. 6 ft. 3 in.) wide, including the exterior mirrors, and stands 1.398 metres (approx. 4 ft. 7 in) tall. Its proportions also display clear symmetries with both the classic Mini and the brand’s present-day line-up. The brand’s familiar appearance is therefore concentrated into a new set of dimensions, with the concept for a new vehicle segment remaining unmistakably recognisable as a MINI.

The interpretation of the characteristic MINI design language chosen for the study car also exudes a powerful and dynamic allure. Tightly contoured surfaces, large wheels and a basic form dictated by straight lines help give the MINI Rocketman Concept a resoundingly solid structure. In addition to its telltale proportions, a sprinkling of distinctive design features ensure that its brand affiliation is immediately clear. Large, circular headlights and a radiator grille with chrome surround dominate the front end. While the exterior contours of the headlights fit the familiar visual template, their inner structure has been further developed for the new study. The centrally positioned LED units generating full beam are bordered by an eye-catching light ring for dipped-beam mode. Direction indicators integrated into the headlight units are a feature shared with the current range of series-produced MINI models.

The dimensions of the headlights reflect those of the current MINI, which means they come across as particularly large when set against the smaller face of the study car. As stand-out features of MINI design they symbolise the core values of the brand, which remain reassuringly intact in the new vehicle concept represented by the study.

In the area surrounding the headlights and around the front apron and radiator grille, sections of the carbon spaceframe are visible alongside the painted and chromed surfaces. Its striking surface structure serves as a reminder of the study’s innovative construction blueprint.

Powerful silhouette, innovative door concept.

Large wheels and the three-level structural split of body, “wraparound” greenhouse and roof resting on top give the flanks the same appearance as the MINI models already in series production. The windows taper as they extend back towards the rear, emphasising the body’s dynamic wedge shape and offering an immediate hint of the vehicle’s sporty and agile character. The high waistline, accentuated on the MINI by a chrome frame ringing the vehicle, takes the form of a light strip on the MINI Rocketman Concept and throws the study’s powerful silhouette into even sharper focus.

The study’s 18-inch wheels likewise leave no doubt that the sure-footed road-holding and sporty handling properties of a MINI can also play a key role in a car with smaller dimensions. The weight-saving wheels specially developed for the MINI Rocketman Concept have an aerodynamically highly effective, enclosed surface structure. And the carbon wing contour of the directional wheels also helps to reduce drag. An aluminium trim strip on the wheel rim adds an attractive stylistic touch.

Among the car’s key design and functionality-related innovations are the
two side doors. Their length and the specially designed arrangement of
the door sills allow extremely comfortable access to all the seats in the
MINI Rocketman Concept. When opened, the doors pivot outwards complete with their sills, enabling the driver and front passenger to climb in right next to their seats and get settled in comfort. Entry to the rear seats is also made much easier by the car’s unusual door concept. The carbon spaceframe construction, together with the impressively high torsional stiffness of the underbody structure, allows the arrangement of the side sills to be combined with extremely high body rigidity.

In addition, an extremely sophisticated opening mechanism ensures easy access into the car, even in tight parking spaces. The front-hinged doors have a double-hinge joint, which also allows a large opening angle when space is restricted. The innovative character of this construction element is also evident when the doors are closed, the carbon hinges standing out visibly in form and colour from the rest of the body. The MINI Rocketman Concept thus takes a stylistic cue from the classic Mini, whose exterior-mounted door hinges also went on to become an identifying characteristic.

Projector-style rear lights, transparent and illuminated glass for the roof.

The rear lights of the MINI Rocketman Concept have a trapezoidal stirrup design – into which all the light functions are integrated – and work using projector technology. The lamp assembly projects the rear and braking light and the light for the direction indicators onto the car body. The high-output LED units used for the lights ensure that even this indirect illumination concept produces the accustomed intensity of light that is necessary for safety.

The roof of the MINI Rocketman Concept also puts on an extraordinary light show. The full-surface glass roof is segmented by illuminated braces to recreate the look of Britain’s Union Jack flag. When not illuminated, the longitudinal, horizontal and diagonal braces glow a bright Porcelain White. In darkness the integrated optical fibres give the interior of the MINI Rocketman Concept a pleasantly indirect illumination and, as a result, a more effective nocturnal appearance.

The bright colour of the roof and mirror caps – likewise painted Porcelain White – create an attractive contrast to the Bermuda (a warm shade of grey) of the body. The areas of carbon visible at the front end and around the doors add further striking touches.

Split tailgate with drawer and integrated rear cargo carrier.

The MINI Rocketman Concept also uses creative design and innovative technical solutions to open up new layout options for the luggage area. This enhances the versatility of the existing space and means it can be used more efficiently. The split two-part tailgate consists of one section which is attached to the roof and opens extremely high and a lower section which extends out 350 millimetres from the body in the form of a drawer unit. The drawer represents the further development of the downward-opening tailgate seen on the classic Mini. This construction principle allows room to be made for pieces of luggage and travel items even when the car is carrying four occupants. The MINI Rocketman Concept literally grows as a vehicle when it’s time to start loading up the gear.

An intelligent folding mechanism makes it possible to lock the cargo drawer of the MINI Rocketman Concept either higher up or further in towards the passenger compartment, as the loading scenario demands. This allows loads to be transported out of sight and protected from the weather. If required, items can also be loaded through into the passenger compartment. In addition, the open-top cargo drawer can also serve as a rear luggage carrier. Here, purpose-built inserts make it easier to transport snowboards and other bulky items of sports equipment. Added to which, the glass tailgate, which extends well into the roof, helps to enhance loading flexibility. It is connected with the body via a centrally positioned hinge with integrated gas strut system, which also allows it to be opened when the rear carrier is loaded with gear.

Seat concept: the ideal position for every mobility requirement.

The arrangement of the seats and control elements in the passenger compartment of the MINI Rocketman Concept ensures maximum versatility for the widest possible range of mobility needs. The low-weight seats, which are traditional MINI in form, offer a high level of comfort and optimum lateral support even for sporty drivers. The amount of space for the driver and passengers can be varied as required. Three individual seats slide fore and aft, allowing a high level of comfort with generous head, leg and shoulder room. There is also an additional seat in the rear, whose backrest can be folded down fully to serve as a stowage surface.

Three mobility scenarios have been developed to define the real-life usage possibilities offered by the interior of the study. In a layout designed specially to enhance a sporting driving experience, the MINI Rocketman Concept offers just the right amount of space for the driver and front passenger. The front seats are pushed back as far as possible and the instrument cluster also slides fore and aft to provide the ideal position for a full-blooded driving experience.

If an additional passenger joins the two already on board, the front passenger can move his seat forward again to take a position slightly further forward than the driver. In this configuration, the front passenger’s legroom is reduced to standard MINI levels to accommodate an equally generously sized rear seat behind him. The MINI Rocketman Concept also offers a practical solution for travelling with four people. Once the driver has returned both his seat and the instrument cluster to the standard position, a second rear seat allows a fourth person to climb aboard for shorter journeys, at least.

Innovative mix of materials, hallmark MINI design.

The impressive variability of the interior is complemented by a pure-bred design which spotlights both the unmistakable style of the brand and the study car’s pioneering technology. The intention behind the selection of materials and interior trim structure was to create a feeling of contemporary functionality and lightness. To this end, the carbon structure of the body frame has been left exposed in the footwells and around the centre console.

A fresh interpretation of customary MINI design features emphasises the further development of the brand’s characteristic design language inside the study car as well. The door panels house the door pulls and the stowage compartments, which feature trim elements whose elliptical form reaches past the B-pillar into the rear compartment. The surface design therefore offers a stylistic nod to the variable division of space and shared driving experience provided by the MINI Rocketman Concept interior.

Inside the car, leather covers and high-gloss painted surfaces combine with armrests and trim strips made from a special paper that has been pressed and folded into the desired structure. The trim strips are backlit by LED-powered fibre optics. Plus, a light strip that wraps around the interior at waistline height generates a particularly harmonious ambience.

Innovative operating concept: trackball on the steering wheel,
3D-effect graphics in the Centre Speedo.

An operating concept developed for the MINI Rocketman Concept brings together principles from the MINI design handbook, innovative new functions and a pioneering operating system to serve up even greater driving fun over both short and long journeys. A cockpit instrument, positioned above the steering wheel and therefore directly in the driver’s field of view, houses the rev counter and on-board computer display. The large-format Centre Speedo with peripheral speedometer and multifunctional colour display also adheres to the system logic familiar from the current range of series-produced MINI cars as far as display arrangement is concerned. The development of the rigorously applied display/control element separation principle, meanwhile, has been taken to the next level.

In addition to multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, the current
MINI also has a joystick on the centre console for operating vehicle-related, navigation, entertainment and communications functions. By contrast, the
MINI Rocketman Concept concentrates all the control elements on the steering wheel. This reflects an ongoing commitment to the concept of simple and intuitive operation, and means that the driver can operate more functions than ever while keeping both hands on the steering wheel at all times.

A press of the thumb on the relevant multifunction buttons on the left-hand steering wheel spoke is all that is required to use front-line controls such as the volume for the audio system and the call pick-up function for incoming telephone calls. In addition, a trackball is integrated into the right-hand steering wheel spoke. Inspired by computer operating, this element allows the driver to control an impressively wide range of processes. For example, to navigate through the menu levels the driver turns the trackball horizontally, while vertical movements allow him to scroll up and down lists. The driver then selects the desired function with a press of the trackball. With selected functions such as in-car internet, the driver uses his thumb to move the cursor around the display in any direction.

The graphics in the colour display of the Centre Speedo are more diverse, higher quality and sharper than ever. High-resolution 3-D graphics open up new possibilities in the need-based selection of functions using the trackball and display. According on the driver’s preference and the driving situation, particularly relevant displays and alerts are moved into the foreground, while the remaining status displays remain visible on a display level further back. This makes it significantly easier to move quickly and intuitively between the navigation map display, music programme selection and telephone contacts list.

Flawless connectivity and new ways of personalising the car
configuration.

The navigation, communications and entertainment systems in the
MINI Rocketman Concept represent the consistent further development of the functions already available through MINI Connected in current series-produced MINI cars. Intelligent connectivity turns the car into a mobile element of the driver’s personal lifestyle. Internet-based services for communications, integrated navigation and an almost limitlessly expandable entertainment programme play a key role in maximising driving fun, comfort and safety. With the control elements developed for the MINI Rocketman Concept, personalised usage of these functions reaches a new level. The removable control unit (for comfort and connectivity functions) integrated into the Centre Speedo can be configured on a computer before the start of a journey, enabling the driver to transfer new music files, a navigation destination and contact details for mobile communications and internet usage into the vehicle with maximum convenience.

These innovative control systems allow driving fun in a MINI to become an integrated component of the driver’s personal lifestyle more than ever. Indeed, information, images, data, contacts and media can be made available in digital form for mobile usage anywhere – at home, at the workplace or while on the move. Known as the MINI Rocketman Concept, the mobile control unit stores telephone numbers and email contacts, as well as navigation data, internet addresses and full websites or messages from online social networks, music files, photos and videos. This provides a direct route into the MINI for additional sources of driving fun in the shape of new destinations, important contacts, up-to-date information, exciting sounds and powerful images. In the opposite direction, this extended connectivity can also enrich everyday life outside the car; for example, new contact details from telephone calls or online connections can also be made available outside the car via the MINI Rocketman Concept.

Mini Says Merci to The Monte

MINI SAYS MERCI TO THE MONTE – at the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique with Rauno Aaltonen.

The Monte Carlo Rally celebrates its centenary this year. MINI was keen to be among the well-wishers, and the brand entered a team in the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique. Finnish legend Rauno Aaltonen – winner of the Monte in 1967 in a Mini Cooper S – emerged victorious.

The 'Rally Professor', as Aaltonen was dubbed on account of his precision and attention to detail, recruited Austrian Helmut Artacker as co-driver in his 1969 Cooper S, and the teak had the support of a four strong service crew through the highs and lows of the event.

As is customary for the Monte Carlo Rally, the cars travelled to Monte Carlo for the special stages from five different cities. The MINI team were handed Marrakech as their starting point, leaving them over 2,600 kilometres to cover just to reach the start line in Monte Carlo. “The whole atmosphere was very cordial and friendly, both with the locals in Morocco and the organisers, and among the competitors. It was a bit like The Arabian Nights,” said Rauno Aaltonen, describing the start of the event in the North African country. From Morocco, where they were given a police escort through some of the towns, the route took the team over to Algeciras in Spain and on to Alicante. That marked the beginning of a 30-hour stage via Barcelona and the Pyrenees to the Maritime Alps, and on to Monte Carlo. However, before they could get under way, the Rally Professor had some duties to fulfil. A big crowd of fans had massed at the port, despite the early start, to ask Aaltonen for his autograph. “I’m really happy to oblige, even if my long name makes it all a bit hard work,” joked the Finn.

British Mini Club start off the year with an indoor Mini event that is expected to attract thousands of Mini enthusiasts to Staffordshire County Showground for one of the largest events in the British Mini Club calendar.

This years event, on Sunday, 30th January, looks set to attract more than 5,000 visitors and is on track to be an extra special day. Kick start 2011 celebrating the 50th year of the Mini Pick-up and the Elf and Hornet saloons.

Mini Sport Ltd have one of the largest stands at the show selling a massive range of performance and custom accessories. On display will be their very own ’one off’ ultimate performance classic mini called ‘Bogus’ worth over £40,000.

Mini Magazine will be announcing the ‘best featured’ Mini of 2010.

Visitors will get the opportunity to meet a new company The Classic Mini People showing some outstanding classic Minis.

Dani Sordo Joins WRC Team

Banbury/Munich, 05.01.2011. Spanish driver Daniel “Dani” Sordo will strengthen the new MINI WRC Team in the 2011 FIA World Rally Championship. He will team up with Kris Meeke (GB) when MINI makes its return to rallying with the MINI WRC this coming season.

“There has been a great deal of excitement surrounding MINI’s return to the WRC, so to be part of this new team is a fantastic opportunity for me,” says the 27-year-old Sordo. “I’m sure MINI has a big future in the sport. I’m looking forward to working with Kris Meeke, having completed a very successful test with him in Sardinia last November.”

Dr Wolfgang Armbrecht, Senior Vice President Brand Management MINI, says: “Both Dani and Kris fit well with the MINI brand, and can offer the MINI WRC programme not only experience and speed but also the right chemistry we need to build the team.”

“Dani may only be 27, but he is already one of the most experienced drivers in the WRC and has been competing at the very highest level for the last five years,” says David Richards, Chairman of Prodrive. “I believe with the new MINI WRC and in the right environment, he can now take the next step and add to his 29 podiums with victories on WRC events and become a challenger for a WRC title.”

Dani Sordo is an experienced and successful WRC contender, having participated in the championship since 2003 and driving in the same team as Sébastien Loeb for several seasons. He is a former Junior World Rally Champion, and to date in the WRC has secured an impressive 29 podium finishes and 102 stage wins.

Sordo began his career in motocross when he was 12 years old, achieving success also in hillclimbing, karting and touring cars. He first drove in a WRC event at the Rally Catalunya, the Spanish round of the series, in 2003 in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII, finishing 18th overall. He won the Spanish Junior Rally Championship that year, and retained the title in 2004, while gaining further international experience at WRC rounds in Argentina, France and Spain.

After clinching the Junior World Rally Championship title in 2005, Sordo then joined the Kronos Total Citroën World Rally Team in 2006 when he was first paired with Loeb. Sordo finished the 2006 season with four podium places, 49 points and fifth overall in the Drivers’ Championship. He has driven for the Citroën Total World Rally Team since 2007, and while in the WRC has achieved a total of 17 second place finishes, taking the third step of the podium 12 times.

In 2007, Sordo finished fourth in the WRC Drivers’ Championship, was placed third in the standings in 2008 and 2009 and finished the 2010 season fifth overall. In 2011, the MINI WRC Team will enter at least six WRC events which will give Sordo and his co-driver Diego Vallejo the chance to work closely with the Banbury, UK-based, Prodrive outfit responsible for preparing the MINI WRC.

Seven for 2011

According to a recent Auto Express we can expect 7, yes Seven, new MINI's in 2011, sounds like a lot of cars to us.

The MINI Paceman, shown here, is probably the most masculine of them all, based on the Countryman, it is a 3 door Coupe aimed squarely at the Volkswagen Scricco...“It is ten years exactly since the new MINI was launched to the US market so there is a happy symmetry in presenting an all-new concept at the Detroit Show” said Jochen Goller, MINI Director for BMW UK Ltd. “Following last year’s launch of the MINI Countryman and the forthcoming launches of the MINI Coupé and Roadster, the Paceman Concept shows once again not only the innovative spirit and adventure among its design team, but also the potential breadth of the MINI brand as it grows and develops.”

What else can we expect 2011? Well according to Auto Express we will be seeing the Coupe and Roadster, plus the MINI entering the WRC with a Rally version of the Countryman, the pictures of which are quite awesome. The MINI is already entered in the Dakar Rally. We could see the Beachcomber concept return as the Moke and of course the MINI Scooters and finally...

Perhaps the car they should have built 10 years ago is the 10ft long Mini MINI. This car is exactly the same length as the original and is promised to be just as much fun. Possibly called the MINI Minor. We shall wait and see!!

5 Stars for the MINI Countryman

The MINI Countryman breaks new ground in delivering the brand’s hallmark driving fun to anything up to five seats, while simultaneously taking on role model status in terms of safety. The first MINI model with four doors and a large tailgate has claimed the top 5-star score in the latest Euro NCAP crash test results. In this internationally recognised test programme – which was further tightened in 2009 by the addition of more test criteria – the MINI Countryman put in a convincing performance with its wide range of standard-fitted safety equipment designed to ensure highly effective occupant protection for both adults and children in various types of collision. Alongside the high levels of active and passive safety designed to reduce the risk of injury inside the MINI Countryman, its pedestrian protection measures also played their part in securing the top rating.

In the frontal collision at a speed of up to 64 km/h, which forms part of the Euro NCAP crash test, the passenger cell of the MINI Countryman proved to be extremely stable. Irrespective of the size and sitting position of the passengers, only a slight risk of injury was detected. The MINI Countryman earned the maximum number of points for occupant protection in a side-on collision, while the testers also rated the risk of injury to the cervical vertebrae in a rear-end collision as low. The crash test results were just as positive when it came to the use of seat systems for three-year-old and 18-month-old children. Both in the frontal and the side-on collision, a stable position and minimal head movements at the moment of impact were registered in each case.

The high degree of occupant protection in the MINI Countryman is based on a holistic safety concept that is applied to all brand models. Robust load-path structures and precisely defined deformation zones ensure that the impact forces in a crash are absorbed in specific areas and kept away from the highly rigid passenger compartment. The load-path structures in the floor section, side members, bulkhead and front and rear of the vehicle are coordinated in such a way that the impact force is dispersed among as many body elements as possible and does not reach the passenger cell.

Among the equipment protecting the passengers inside the MINI Countryman are front and side airbags, curtain head airbags covering both rows of seats, three-point inertia-reel seatbelts for all seats and ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear. The front seats have belt tensioners and belt force limiters, while the safety steering column of the MINI Countryman also comes with a deformation element. The body structure, restraint systems and safety electronics are perfectly coordinated to minimise the consequences of any type of collision.

The technology contributing to the MINI Countryman’s active safety includes Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which is fitted as standard. This system comprises not only ABS anti-lock brakes but also Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Brake Assist and Hill Assist. The MINI Countryman also has a runflat indicator as a standard feature. This system monitors the tyres and uses a visual signal in the on-board computer display to alert the driver to any tyre damage.

The test procedure of the NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) is considered one of the most rigorous in the world to be applied to new vehicles. Governments, automobile clubs and consumer associations across Europe acknowledge the Euro NCAP test as the benchmark for vehicle crash safety. The test profile includes a frontal collision, a side-on crash and a side impact against a steel post. 2009 saw the introduction of further criteria with regard to electronic safety features as well as to additional injury risks in a wide spectrum of collisions.

Beyond these considerations, the Euro NCAP crash test also attaches great importance to pedestrian protection. The MINI Countryman takes account of these demands through elaborately formed body elements with yielding structures at the front of the car, which help reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists. The testers awarded the maximum number of points for the front bumper and front-end elements with regard to the risk of head injury to children in the event of a collision.

The MINI Countryman is the second of the brand’s current range of models to undergo the Euro NCAP crash test and immediately scoop the top 5-star rating. Prior to this the MINI Cooper had already secured the coveted maximum score from the independent NCAP testers by virtue of its comprehensive standard-fitted safety features and its exemplary crash behaviour in a diverse range of collisions.

Paul Weller designs MINI for charity auction

Following his headline performance at MINI’s 50th Birthday extravaganza at Silverstone in 2009, mod rock legend Paul Weller has collaborated with MINI to create a one off car which will be sold in a live global online auction with all proceeds going to charity. The unique MINI Cooper is the ultimate British icon, it was designed by Paul Weller, built in Oxford and hand-painted by MINI craftsmen. The car will be auctioned for one month from 11 November to raise money for charities Nordoff Robins and War Child.

Weller’s inspiration for the design - which features bold pink and brown stripes across the car’s entire body and is finished with a single silver line running up the bonnet and over the roof - comes from the colours in a Ben Sherman shirt he designed for the clothing brand some years ago.

MINI UK’s Director, Jochen Goller says “Both MINI and Paul Weller are synonymous with the quintessential British mod scene. That’s why we were the ideal match to create this unique car.”

Paul Weller said “I've always loved and driven MINIs so when I was given the opportunity to design a bespoke Mini Cooper I wanted to create something that reflected the mood and colours associated with the Mod era, which was also the classic Mini’s hey day. I’d already expressed these colours in a shirt I designed for Ben Sherman a few years ago, so it made sense to me to continue the theme using a MINI Cooper as a palate.

I’ve decided to donate the car to two charities: War Child is an amazing organization which works tirelessly to provide protection for kids who live in some of the world's most dangerous places - Iraq, Afghanistan, Uganda and DRC. Nordoff Robbins is the charity that really uses music to transform the lives of kids and adults fundraising to help and support these vulnerable people.”

The bidding starts on 11th November at www.paulwellerminiauction.com and will run for one month. The car will be on display in MINI’s flagship showroom on Park Lane, London for the duration of the auction.

The car is a 2009 MINI Cooper, with 17’’ Crown Spoke Alloys, black leather upholstery, Bluetooth, front heated seats, and Chili Pack. All proceeds of the auction will be divided between the two charities.

MINI Teams up with Rally legends

Rally legends Paddy Hopkirk and David Richards will go head to head driving MINIs at the RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge this weekend. The inaugural RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge will showcase to the latest electric, hybrid and low-emission passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. Royal Automobile Club trophies will be awarded in different categories for the most energy efficient vehicles that have completed the 60-mile Brighton to London run starting in Brighton at 8am. These future cars will be on display in Regent Street from 12.30am till 4pm.

Former British and World Rally Champion, Paddy Hopkirk, drove to victory in the Mini Cooper in the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally. On Saturday 6th November Paddy will be back behind the wheel of a MINI; this time a MINI Cooper D – the brand’s most efficient model, emitting just 99g/km CO2 and achieving an impressive 74.3 mpg (on the combined cycle).

Prodrive boss, David Richards CBE, will drive MINI’s 100% electric powered car – MINI E. As well as being a former British and World Rally Champion, David Richards is today best known for his more recent successes in motorsport. His latest venture will see MINI returning to the World Rally Championship with the latest model – the MINI Countryman in 2011.

Paddy and David will drive the differently powered MINIs in a 60-mile challenge. Each will be trying to be the most efficient in terms of energy used by their respective cars.

Snowdon Bike Ride for Cancer Research

Long time British Mini Club member Gavin Lloyd is organising a charity mountain bike ride up Mount Snowdon on 2nd October 2010. There will be 13 people taking part including Gavin. The 13 consist of very close friends and work colleagues, all with different levels of fitness. Some members of the group have been training for the last 12 months.

Gavin comments "We are hoping to raise £5000 for Cancer Research. We will depart Llanberis at the Mountain Railway at around 2.00pm. The climb will be 3650ft above sea level and will involve riding, carrying and pushing the bikes to reach the summit without using the Mountain Railway.

Along the way we have picked up 9 company sponsors including Warburtons Bakery and National Express, who I work for. Our biggest sponsor, who have put the most effort into raising money for this event are the British Mini Club. Who have to date raised over £1000 through their Mini shows over the year.

The people who are taking part all have there own reasons for taking part due to cancer affecting all of us in one way or another."

GP's Invade Wales 2010

Last year Mini Driver did an article by GP Mick Walsh on our first ever GP only run in the UK where 9 GPs “invaded” mid Wales for the day. We had such good fun that we were persuaded to do it all over again for this year. Work and winter intervened but early March found GP Mick posting up on the forums to see who really wanted to do it again and us firing up our JCW clubby and out spec’ing a route as my birthday ‘treat’ – this could be difficult with so many of our great Welsh roads to choose from. We came up with a different route this year with more challenging terrain for our GPs to handle and with plenty of wow factor (if the weather held out) – 115 miles of pure fun taking in the Epynt mountain ranges and the famous Abergwesyn Pass rally routes, Devils Bridge, Aberystwyth and over the Pumlumon (“Five Peaks”) ranges - the highest summit in the Cambrian Mountains of Mid-Wales back to finish at Clywedog Dam.

Some fellow GP-ers made a weekend of it whilst others travelled across on the day. Daz and Kate had a bit of a mini adventure on their way here with a Satnav disaster, a punctured tyre and a bull - thank god for run flats! We made a few calls and GP Mick and Dave GP1019 came to the rescue with a spare tyre and means of getting it here! Pre-run meet up on Saturday night with those staying over for a pint and good natter on all things MINI and handing out the run packs. Chris & Helen stayed in town and strolled down to the nearest pub – to be met with the launch party for the election campaign for Lord Offa of the Dykes, Monster Raving Loony Party - and Goofy! What a welcome.

An early breakfast meet for 5 GPs enroute to the start but as we arrived at the lake at Llandrindod Wells we had been beaten to it – a gleaming row of GPs already lined up and raring to go. Quick chat and a move round the lake for photo line up featuring at least 3 concourse winners and a welcome and route pack run through by. A quick tutorial for me from Tony (DJTonyLee) on the radios and we’re off - 13 GPs with welsh flags a flapping and the sun just waking up.

Down to Builth Wells, over hills and dips and a zip up on to the Epynt army ranges – great, no one at the view point and our first stop of the day – what a view! The mountains don’t look bad either. Some of the Epynt roads are used three or four times a year for stage rallying and all the legendary names of rallying have driven on these roads; Ari Vatenen, Russel Brookes, Hannu Mikola, Jimmy McRae, Bjorn Waldegard and Tony Pond to name just a few. Bit breezy yet up here so early off and away we go, popping and banging on to Abergwesyn (after a tractor delay and a last chance loo stop caused a traffic jam!)

From here starts probably one of the best known road rally routes in Wales, known as the Abergwesyn Pass, taking you through stunning mountain scenery along an ancient drovers route. From the phone box in the village of Abergwesyn to the phone box in Tregaron, it is 18 miles in length. The record for the fastest time on this road on a road rally is 18 minutes! It was set in the Motoring News Road Rally Championship days by Mick Briant in an Escort - 18 miles in 18 minutes is an average of 60mph - which sounds tame unless you know the road.

Mind the drop, the loose sheep, the blind brows and that amazing view (in the mirror behind us). Start of the auto test as we find first gear for a spurt up the devils staircase, and over the highest part of the pass summit 1,578ft, and a sprint down to Tregaron (a welsh rival to Ascot with its horse “trotting” races held near Llanddewi Brefi (yes, that Llanddewi Brefi!)). A great pace up the B4343 from Tregaron to Devils Bridge and thanks to Tony (DJ_TonyLee – Events Co-ordinator with Nottingham Mini Club) and his dad Geoff for leading group 2 after we got split up by a volvo (these roads do bring out the boy).

Down into Aberystwyth and we caused a big stir with the locals as Tony lined us all up for photos with harbour and castle backdrop (bit of a big drop into the harbour behind us.). Then we were off around the town, up the other harbour end and a parade up the promenade – we GPs do like to show off! Up to ‘Mini-versity’ for a spot of lunch at The Arts Centre at Aberystwyth University – GPs all lined up in the car park and a chance for more photos and to admire strut braces, brakes, engines and all manner of mods. A pit stop refuel for some V-power juice with a bemused taxi driver “oh look it’s twins, erm no, triplets, erm no quads, erms lost count”. Bye bye to Cooper 1019 Dave & Carole and Steve & Heather en route as they needed an early finish. Over to Borth and up a bumpy road back to the A487 where we got stuck behind a 4x4 with 4 sheep in the boot (as you do) – but a bit of a blast into Machynlleth once he turned off.

Through the town and hang right for Dylife and Staylittle. Really enjoying the pace but we stopped at the bottom of the mountain climb for GPDaz to go ahead to get some good video/pics. Sorry guys - it wasn’t to clear the road for an unofficial hill climb – wouldn’t that have been good, but we did pick up our heels up the hill.

All pulled up on the top of the world (PUMLUMON - pronounced “Pimlimmon” – its name means “Five Peaks” – is the highest summit in the Cambrian Mountains of Mid-Wales) and an enthusiastic professional photographer appeared from nowhere round the corner taking pics and was over the moon to see the GPs – quickly giving us his details and as we set off again zooming on up the road ahead with his lady driving and him clambering out the sunroof – big grin and taking loads of pics.

Around the dam turn and a steady run to the finish point at Clywedog Dam Viewing Point bang on time. Much laughter and photos and a quick plug for Tony’s European trip early May. NB. “GP Mick” Walsh and Jenny were unable to make it on the run and were greatly missed by all but we were happy to catch up with them at British Mini Club day at Himley Hall. You may have heard that we then had the very sad news that Mick Walsh passed away on Thursday 8th July 2010 after a very short illness. All our thoughts in the GP UK Owners Club, British Mini Club, Nottingham Mini Club and the wider mini community are with Jenny his fiancé, and his sisters, brothers and family at this very sad time. Mick was a true and passionate supporter and promoter of all things Mini/MINI and will be very sadly missed. The GP UK Owners Club and Nottingham Mini Club are raising money in memory of Mick for Cancer Research and should you visit our stands at one of the shows we will be only too happy to accept any contributions you may wish to make towards this. MINI confirms entry into 2011 WRC

MINI is making a comeback on the international rally circuit. From 2011, the brand will compete at selected rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and will go on to contest the entire season from 2012 onwards. This involvement is planned for several years.

The car charged with this task is the MINI Countryman WRC, which is being developed by Prodrive, in close cooperation with MINI, and is based on the production model. The powerful heart of the racing car is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged engine from BMW Motorsport. The car complies with the new Super2000 regulations put in place by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), which stipulate the use of turbo engines with 1,600 cc displacement and four-wheel drive combined with an increased emphasis on road relevant technologies. The result is a significant 25 per cent reduction in overall costs. The first test drive for the MINI Countryman WRC, which will also be available to customer teams, is planned for autumn 2010.

This decision sees MINI continue its success story in the world of rallying. In the 1960s, the MINI Cooper S caused a sensation with victories at the legendary Monte Carlo Rally. The company also tasted success on many occasions in the European Rally Championship. Having already demonstrated the sporty character of its models in many countries in the MINI CHALLENGE, the brand is now taking its presence in motorsport to a new level with the commitment to the WRC.

Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing, says: “I am delighted MINI will be represented on one of the most popular stages in international motorsport. The success enjoyed on the rally circuit has made a vital contribution to the image of the brand. MINI customers have always shown great interest in motorsport. I am convinced we will add a few more chapters to our success story in rallying. The MINI Countryman provides an excellent basis, from which to create a competitive racing car for the world championship. In Prodrive, we have a strong and experienced partner. We will work hard together over the coming months to ensure we get the project on track right from the word go.”

“This is a very exciting new motorsport programme,” said Prodrive Chairman, David Richards. “During the 1960s MINI captured the imagination of the world when the tiny car took on the might of V8 powered Fords and won what was then one of the toughest motorsport events, the 4000km Monte Carlo rally. I believe our new MINI will become a firm favourite of the latest generation of rally fans, just as it is adored by its millions of owners across the world. We already have a significant number of confirmed customer orders for the new MINI rally car with the first deliveries scheduled for the start of the 2011 season.”

Prodrive has been working on developing the MINI Countryman WRC since early 2009. The company was formed in 1984 by Richards, who won the World Rally Championship as co-driver to Ari Vatanen (FI) three years earlier. Based in Banbury (GB), Prodrive has developed into a leading independent company in the motorsport and automobile sector under Richards' guidance, and today employs over 500 staff. Prodrive's many successes currently include six overall victories in the World Rally Championship, five titles in the British Touring Car Championship and three class victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours (FR).

BMW was present when the World Rally Championship made its debut back in 1973. Achim Warmbold (DE) and Jean Todt (FR) tasted victory in their BMW 2002 at the Alpenfahrt Rally in Austria. However, MINI's tradition in this discipline stretches back even further: Pat Moss (GB) clinched the first victory with the MINI 850 at the 1959 Mini Miglia National Rally. MINI ultimately enjoyed its finest hours at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967: the MINI Cooper S celebrated three overall victories at the most iconic rallying event in the world. Paddy Hopkirk (IR, 1964), Timo Mäkinen (FI, 1965) and Rauno Aaltonen (FI, 1967) joined the list of winners at this prestigious event. In 1965, “Rally Professor” Aaltonen also won the European Rally Championship. Tony Ambrose (GB) and Mäkinen finished second and third to round off an excellent overall result for the MINI Cooper S. In addition, MINI drivers also enjoyed many individual wins at renowned rallies throughout Europe. The last BMW World Rally Championship victory was achieved in 1987 in Corsica by Bernard Béguin (FR) driving a BMW M3 which was built and run by Prodrive.

From 2011, over 40 years down the line, the MINI Countryman WRC will be charged with adding further chapters to this success story. It bridges the gap between the classic MINI concept and a contemporary Sports Activity Vehicle. The brand’s first model to feature four doors and a wide-opening tailgate, it offers more space – which can be used in a wide variety of ways – to go with its raised seating position and optimised ride comfort. Plus, the “go-kart” feeling for which MINI is a byword has been preserved and takes on a new dimension with the optional MINI ALL4 all-wheel-drive system. The MINI Countryman expresses the defining virtues of the brand in terms of design, premium quality, handling, efficiency and the scope for customisation – and does so in an absorbingly individual way.

Come along to our BMC Mini Nights during the summer at The New Wellington Brettell Lane, Brierley Hill, West Midands. The meeting start at 8.30pm every Tuesday night.

Each mini gets entered into of Show 'N' Shine League, the one with the most votes each week wins a trophy, with the points added up into our Mini league table. The mini with the most points at the end of summer will win a pack of goodies from the BMC.

Keith Calver will be on hand for the evening offering his knowledge as always.

British Mini Club members will receive wholesale discount on any purchases or orders made on the night.

Best Classic and Best New Mini will continue as well as Worst Mini. Winners will get wholesale discount for the year. Voting will close at 7.30pm.

We will be having the burger van here again and the first 100 people to turn up in a Mini will receive a free meal deal (Burger or hot dog, chips and a drink).

We are simplifying the competitions this year and just having a small prize drawer. Each person will be given a free raffle ticket when they turn up. They will then be given another free ticket if they make a purchase or place an order. First prize will be 2 tickets to MiniFest Uttoxeter on the 5th September. There will be 3 runners up prizes of goodies bags. Raffle will be drawn at approx 8pm when we can hopefully announce the winners of the concours comps too. If the person is not present and come forward to claim their prize at the time of the draw, we will keep drawing tickets until we have a winner that is present.

MINI Countryman revealed

The British Mini Club are at Plant Oxford where the new Countryman has been revealed exclusivly to UK Mini clubs. Introduced by chief MINI designer Gert Hilderbrand who had flown in from Munich especially.

Under the covers the Countryman looked very big. However when the covers were pulled back it shocked everyone. It is certainly no bigger than the Ford C-Max and probably more Golf Plus size. The four seater has adjustable rear seats which provide even more leg room. This enables children to be closer, or further, to front seat passengers.

The spec on the Cooper seems to come in quite high with the visibility pack appearing to be standard. We loved the Cooper S though. No need for an air vent as the car quite high so airflow not a problem. The vent is included in the bumper, which actually looks very immpressive and gives the S a good face.

Vents are included in the bumper to cool the brakes.

It is certainly a very immpressive MINI and should be a strong 4th member of the family. The Countryman should bring families to MINI, I for one can not wait to drive the Countryman.

Himley so far

The day is going well so far. Good and warm, with a full concours field. The Mini Cooper S above is one of the oldest in concours and always does well. Be interesting to see the awards later.

Massive showing from clubs and we managed to get them all in the arean with not to many delays. The NMC and GP's have a superb display of new MINI's. It always surprises us how many different classic Minis we see every year.

The E Type from the Italian Job had just left and the owner gave a very interesting talk on it's history, and of course next year is 50 years of the E Type. Nice to see it parked next to the 3 Italian Job replicas.

Phil Porter is bringing along 848CRY - the only surviving car from the Italian Job. It's the red E-Type that got squashed by a digger in the film and he subsequently bought and had restorred. It'll be at Himley til lunchtime

Greg Jenkins is bringing his Italian Job replica Minis - as featured recently in MiniWorld. He's planning on being there all day we believe.

The British Mini Club has sorted out a nice display area for the 4 cars, so this should be quite a photo opportunity.

Himley Hall is near Dudley in the West Midlands. The complete Mini enthusiasts event brought to you by the British Mini Club. This superb event is open to owners of both classic Mini and new MINI. This is probably the British Mini Clubs biggest event and constantly attracts 7000 visitors. Situated in the grounds of a stately home & park, & very easy to find - Just off the A449 between Kidderminster & Wolverhampton. KIW 75 has changed to Cabrio for Himley!

This is very exciting news for Himley Hall on the 9th May. We all know and love KIW 75, the superb Mini that comes from Northern Ireland and owned by Paul Marshall... well not anymore! It has been sold and replaced by a Rover Cabrio and is coming to Himley. This will certainly spice up the Cabrio concours class. We know fellow cabrio owner Tracy Lippett is working had on her cabrio as we speak..

Paul from www.minisni.com told us "After the Premier Concours Finals at Uttoxeter I took the head staggers and sold my mini,KIW 75,and bought a Carribean Blue Rover Cabriolet.Over the winter we have bare shelled the car and it is now sitting finished and ready to go for MOT a week before Himley and will be driven over to enter concours.Oh of course,It too wears the KIW 75 plate.It has been a bit of a mad rush over the last couple of weeks but we are there now and I am over the moon with the way the car has come out as I am sure the visitors to Himley will be too!

Going fine since 59!
The 1959 Mini Register are making a come back this year with a display of
some of the first minis ever made, Giving the show a real nostalgic theme.

Himley Headliners
This year the van and woody are headling the show with a collection of
models celebrating 50 years. This fine display will around the great lake at
Himley. Anyone wishing to take part with a Van or Woody must contact the
club to get a pass with free entry for the driver.

We have had an amazing response from Classic Mini and Modern MINI owners
clubs at this years show combining the past with the present at Himley.
The club area is almost full to capacity, if your club has not booked in get
it sorted asap.

The Mini Moke club have 10 Mokes on display, and for the first time the
Scamp owners club have a stand showing off these Mini based kit cars.
Nottinghamshire MINI Club have a 25 car strong stand.
Halesowen Classic MOC have 14 members minis getting together at Himley.

Volcanic Ash can Damage Car Paintwork

Motorists across the UK are being warned that the volcanic ash from the Icelandic eruption could damage vehicle paintwork. Car care firm Autoglym has assessed the composition of the ash and issued advice on how to safely remove microscopic residues that have already been deposited, as well as protect a vehicle from subsequent fallout.

The ash – now prevalent in Britain’s upper atmosphere – is composed of tiny jagged shards of rock and glass. Once the highly abrasive, acidic ash has fallen on cars, there exists a real danger of damage to paintwork, glass and even to wiper blades.

Furthermore, the sulphuric content of the ash means the deposits are more acidic than normal airborne dust, representing an increased risk of corrosion, especially for rubber door and window seals, wiper blades and tyres.

Paul Caller, Autoglym CEO explains: “We invest significant sums in researching the impact of road grime and extreme weather conditions on cars, but the fallout from volcanic ash creates an unprecedented challenge for our lab team. The ash contains particles that are substantially larger, harder and more aggressively abrasive on paintwork and glass than normal atmospheric contaminants.

“We are concerned that, as many motorists get their buckets and sponges out for the first time in the warmer weather, they could unwittingly cause damage to their own vehicles, unless they take extra precautions when cleaning their cars. Moreover, many forecasts suggest the eruptions will continue and therefore ash deposits may present a risk for weeks, so motorists must take steps to protect their cars from future deposits.”

Autoglym’s advice on dealing with volcanic ash deposits:

Thoroughly soak car bodywork with water to loosen surface deposits
Use a pH-neutral car bodywork shampoo solution to neutralise acidic fallout
Use a number of smaller buckets rather than a single larger bucket to minimise the risk of ash particles being reapplied to bodywork on the sponge from contaminated water
Keep the car wet with clean water while washing with a sponge – this keeps the surface of the paint lubricated to reduce the risk of scratching from any dust that remains on the bodywork
Pay special attention to wiper blades – which may scratch the windscreen when sweeping ash across the glass surface – and side window seals – which may harbour dust that scratches windows as they are wound up and down
Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all shampoo from the car
Dry the car using a high quality microfibre drying towel or synthetic chamois
Apply a quality polish or high definition wax in order to provide a durable, long-lasting layer of protection, preventing further contaminants adhering to paintwork, and forming a barrier against acidic deposits
Use a specialist automotive rubber treatment to cleanse and protect rubber seals, wiper blades and tyre sidewalls
Wash frequently until the volcanic eruptions cease to minimise the risk of potential future damage
